Morel
Has dangerous lookalikesMorchella esculenta
How to recognise it
A honeycomb of pits and ridges forms the cap, which is fused to the stem. Sliced lengthwise, a true morel is completely hollow inside from cap to base.
Is it dangerous?
A sought-after edible — but 'false morels' are toxic, and even true morels must be cooked and can disagree with some people. Edibility should never be judged from a photo.
Commonly confused with
- False morels (Gyromitra/Verpa) — brain-like or cottony interior, not cleanly hollow — toxic
What to do
Have any find confirmed by an expert and never eat it raw.
Never decide what's safe to eat or touch from a photo or a web page. Identification here is for learning and curiosity only. For anything you might eat, handle or that could harm you or a pet, consult a qualified local expert — and seek medical or veterinary care if exposure has happened.
