How to recognise it

A cat-sized black mammal with two bold white stripes that meet in a cap on the head and run down a bushy tail.

Is it dangerous?

It won't chase you, but it sprays a powerful, lingering musk when threatened — and it's a notable rabies carrier. Never approach one, especially a skunk out in daylight or acting strangely.

What to do

Back away slowly and quietly if you meet one. Secure trash and pet food; report a daytime or oddly-behaving skunk to animal control.

Recorded 41,727 times in the wild worldwide.
