How to recognise it

A glossy jet-black spider with a red hourglass mark on the underside of its round abdomen. Builds a messy, strong web low down in sheltered spots.

Is it dangerous?

Venomous — a bite can cause intense muscle pain and cramping and other systemic symptoms. It's rarely fatal with medical care, but children and the elderly are more at risk.

Commonly confused with

  • Common house spider dull brown, no red hourglass
