Symploce hebardi
HarmlessSymploce is a large genus of small, outdoor-dwelling cockroaches commonly found in leaf litter, mulch, and under tree bark. While they prefer to live outside, they occasionally wander into homes at night, often attracted by artificial lights.
What does Symploce hebardi look like?
These small cockroaches typically measure less than half an inch long and are dark brown or reddish-brown in color. They have flattened, oval-shaped bodies, long thread-like antennae, and many species possess shortened or completely absent wings.
Is Symploce hebardi dangerous?
Unlike some indoor pest species, these outdoor cockroaches do not bite, sting, or spread diseases to humans or pets. They are strictly a nuisance if they accidentally wander inside your house.
Commonly confused with
- German cockroach: German cockroaches are indoor pests with two distinct dark parallel stripes behind their heads, whereas Symploce lack these markings and prefer outdoor habitats.
- Asian cockroach: Asian cockroaches are strong fliers attracted to lights and have a pale brown stripe on their pronotum, while Symploce are weaker fliers and uniformly dark.
What should I do about Symploce hebardi?
If they wander indoors, simply sweep them up and release them outside. Prevent future visits by turning off unnecessary outdoor lights at night and sealing gaps around doors and windows.
